The Butler: Complete Gameplay Guide and Walkthrough
The Butler is a psychological horror experience that leans heavily on atmosphere, environmental storytelling, and intricate puzzle-solving. Set within a sprawling, decaying estate, the game tasks you with uncovering the dark history of the household while navigating the strict, often lethal, rules set by the titular character.
Core Mechanics and Gameplay Basics
Before diving into the story, it is essential to understand the fundamental systems that govern the world:
The Chore System: Much of the progression is tied to completing daily tasks. Failure to complete these within the allotted "in-game time" or performing them incorrectly alerts the Butler to your incompetence, increasing the threat level.
Stealth and Sound: The wooden floors and marble halls are highly sensitive. Crouching is your primary method of movement when the Butler is nearby. Footsteps on rugs are silent, while floorboards often creak.
Inventory Management: You have limited slots. Key items (keys, valves, fuses) must be prioritized over lore documents. You can store excess items in the trunk located in the Servant’s Quarters.
Sanity Meter: Staying in total darkness or witnessing disturbing events drains your sanity. If it reaches zero, your movements become sluggish, and hallucinations will begin to lead you toward traps.
Phase 1: The Arrival and the Ground Floor
The game begins in the Foyer. Your objective is to check in and receive your first set of instructions.
The First Puzzle: The Grand Clock
To unlock the hallway leading to the kitchen, you must synchronize the Grand Clock.
Solution: Find the "Pocket Watch" in the cloakroom. Note the time (usually 4:15). Interact with the Grand Clock and rotate the hands to match. This triggers a mechanism that drops the Kitchen Key.
Mechanics Explained: Light Sources
In this phase, you receive the Oil Lamp. You must manually refill it at oil stations found in the pantry. Managing your oil is the primary tension of the early game.
Phase 2: The Service Wing and the Basement
Once you enter the Kitchen, the Butler begins his active patrol.
The Basement Puzzle: The Pressure Valves
To restore power to the service elevator, you must balance the steam pressure in the boiler room.
Solution: There are three valves labeled A, B, and C. The gauge must hit exactly 50 PSI.
Valve A adds 15.
Valve B adds 25.
Valve C subtracts 10.
Sequence: Turn A, then B, then A again, then C.
Stealth Challenge: The Meat Locker
The Butler frequently visits the Meat Locker. Hide inside the empty crates when you hear the jingling of keys. Do not hide in the lockers for more than 30 seconds, or your character will begin to hyperventilate, giving away your position.
Phase 3: The Second Floor (The Private Quarters)
This area is more claustrophobic. The floor is heavily carpeted, but the doors are loud and require oiling to open silently.
The Library Puzzle: The Missing Tomes
You need to open a secret passage behind the bookshelf.
Solution: Locate three specific books scattered across the floor: The Red Ledger, The Blue Dynasty, and The Gold Silence.
Place them on the shelf in order of the family's lineage (found in the portrait gallery): Blue, then Gold, then Red.
Mechanics Explained: Peeking
You gain the ability to peek through keyholes. Always peek before entering a room on this floor; if you see a flickering light, the Butler is inside, and entering will result in an immediate "Game Over."
Phase 4: The Attic and the Final Reveal
The final phase shifts from stealth to a more traditional escape-room format.
The Music Box Puzzle
In the Master Bedroom, a music box contains the Master Key, but it is jammed.
Solution: You must find the "Silver Hand-Crank" in the Nursery and the "Tin Ballerina" in the Attic. Combine them in your inventory and use them on the box. Play the melody until the compartment at the base pops open.
The Final Escape
Once you have the Master Key, you must return to the Foyer. However, the Butler is now in a "Hunted" state, meaning he knows exactly where you are.
Strategy: Use the "Servant’s Tunnels" (the small vents located near the floorboards) to bypass the main hallways. These tunnels are a one-way trip to the Foyer, allowing you to bypass the final patrol.
General Tips for Success
Listen for Humming: The Butler hums a low tune when he is nearby but hasn't spotted you. If the humming stops, he has heard a noise and is investigating.
Lean into the Darkness: While it drains sanity, the Butler’s vision is poor in the dark. If you are caught in a hallway, blow out your lamp and crouch in a corner.
Check Every Drawer: Solutions to puzzles are often written on the back of discarded notes or photographs.
No Backtracking: Once you trigger the endgame (picking up the Master Key), all previous "safe zones" become active patrol routes. Plan your path back to the front door before you grab the key.
